CBHI & SUPER STAKES

Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive

The CBHI is an incentive program to promote Canadian barrel horse breeders. It began in 2004 with about 13 breeders and a handful of stallions and now there are well over 150 stallions enrolled from British Columbia to Manitoba. As well, the CBHI hosts a Futurity & Derby with an open barrel & pole jackpot and a horse sale. In 2009 the Super Stakes portion was added to further promote the offspring of nominated CBHI stallions. Offspring of all ages from CBHI nominated stallions will be eligible to win "incentive" money at CBHI approved jackpots and stallion owners will receive a payout based on the number of offspring that placed.

CBHI Super Stakes

The Super Stakes will be run as a "Side Pot" to the original Futurity and starting in 2014 the Derby also. Money for the Super Stakes Futurity side pot is raised from the Stallion Auction. In order for a CBHI horse to be eligible for the Super Stakes, the stallion must have stood in the Stallion Auction that year. All Super Stakes horses will receive a certificate. Basically there are 3 ways to obtain Super Stakes certificates/eligibility:

  • Foal from the purchased stallion service in the Stallion Service Auction
  • Weanling or yearling at the CBHI Horse Sale (stallion must have stood in Stallion Service Auction that year)
  • Weanling or yearling from CBHI Stallion owner's Farm Pick/Berth(1 "pick" per stallion that stood in Stallion Service Auction that year).

The first Super Stakes Futurity was held in 2013 and the first Derby will be in 2014. Here is a list of the estimatedpurses:

The money raised in the Super Stakes Stallion Auction is paid out as follows:

75% of the total purse to horses with Super Stakes Certificates

25% of the total purse to the corresponding stallion owner (sire of the winning horse)

Each purse is then divided for payout:

60% = 1st place (fastest run x a horse with a certificate)

Remaining 40% is divided 2nd = 50%, 3rd = 30%, 4th = 20%
